Sisters are doing it for themselves – as they have for 25 years.
Daphne’s Flight are surely one performance on Later with Jools away from being catapulted into the mainstream. Perhaps it might have already happened if they were more stylised, had a gimmick or complied to music industry expectations.
But what’s most empowering about this ensemble is that they are unashamedly themselves and refuse to compromise. On anything. They run every single aspect of their career.
But, lo, they’re not shouty and don’t take themselves too seriously. With an outlook and spirit aligned to hit podcasts The Guilty Feminist and Fortunately, Daphne’s Flight are five strong women, five outstanding singing talents and multi-instrumentalists, and five close friends whose sum equals more than the individual parts – a status most ‘supergroups' fail to reach.
There is a wonderful joy of five women-of-a-certain-age singing their lives together, which appeals to all age groups. One Millennial festival-goer quipped 'I hope I’m as cool as you when I’m your age’ and unwittingly captured the very essence of Daphne’s Flight and their unique brand of cool.
These five friends first sang together on stage exactly 25 years ago at Cambridge Folk Festival, before recording an album and touring the following year in 1996. The project marked a turning point in the role of women within the English folk movement. Now, 25 years older and 25 years wiser, the unfettered joy of the music and what it does for both artist and audience in the moment is still their driving force.
Considering their collective pedigree, it is hard to believe that few in the mainstream know them, yet.
Daphne’s Flight released their brand-new album ‘On Arrival’ in May 2020
