Patrick Grant has a lot to say about clothes - who makes them, and how they are made. He also wonders why we keep buying more when our wardrobes are full to bursting with clothes we never wear. In fact, today, the average person has nearly five times as many clothes as they did just 50 years ago. Last year, 100 billion garments were produced worldwide, most made from oil, 30% of which were not even sold, and the equivalent of one bin lorry full of clothing is dumped in landfill or burned every single second. In this talk, hear Grant passionately discuss his love of clothes, but also the despair he feels at the crisis of consumption and the broken global system in fashion. Maybe, he argues, we could make ourselves happier if we rediscovered the joy of living with fewer, better-quality things.
Grant will also be signing copies of his book Less after the talk.
With a career in fashion spanning nearly two decades, Grant is a regular on television and radio as a commentator on the clothing and textile industries, but he is best known as a judge on the BBC’s Great British Sewing Bee. He holds an honorary Doctorate from Heriot Watt University, is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and is in the Business of Fashion 500 index of the most influential people in global fashion. In 2016 he launched Community Clothing, a campaigning clothing brand which supports thousands of UK jobs through making and selling affordable high-quality clothing.

Most of our shows use ‘cabaret-style’ seating. This means that your seats will be unreserved, which allows you to decide where to sit when you arrive.
The stalls (downstairs) are set up informally, with chairs around small tables, for a sociable, relaxed atmosphere, and somewhere to put your drink. Cabaret seating also allows space for dancing, which is highly encouraged at Victoria Hall!
For those who prefer a more ‘traditional’ theatre experience, the balcony seats are laid out in rows and raked, ensuring all seats have an excellent view.
For parties of six or more, tables in the stalls can be reserved- contact us to reserve a table. If you have reserved a table, we ask that at least one of your party turn up at least 30 minutes before the performance start time, in order to secure your table.
We can always reserve seating or wheelchair spaces in the stalls for those unable to use the stairs- just let us know when you book your tickets.
Please note, online bookings are subject to a booking fee. Tickets can also be bought by phone on 01729 825718, or in person at our box office. Opening hours are 10am-2pm, Monday-Friday.
Show end times given are an estimate only. Doors open 45 minutes before show start times.
