Come to another exciting concert of traditional Scandinavian music and dance with wonderfully talented Nordic artists.
Brought to you by Scandimoot as part of our weekend event in the Dales <www.scandimoot.org.uk>
Stay on after the concert for more music and dance with the course participants.
Emma Reid & Ellika Frisell: Deeply rooted in the Swedish fiddle tradition, Emma & Ellika play tunes and improvised second voices with power and variety. New compositions stand side by side with traditional material from Bingsjö and Orsa in the county of Dalarna. Fiddles and re-tuned violas; voices with strongly personal expressions.
Emma Reid, a star in the new generation of fiddlers, has roots in both the English and Swedish tradition and is now one of Sweden’s most sought-after musicians. With a powerful self-expression and experience from several genres, Emma has developed a deeply personal playing style.
Ellika Frisell is a stubbornly curious, established veteran on the Swedish folk and world music scene. She has received much acclaim for her life work to further develop the living heritage from her teachers and, in 2021, was awarded the prestigious Folk Music Prize from the Swedish Royal Music Academy for her contributions to Swedish folk music.
Jon Holmén grew up with the music of his home village of Boda and began playing fiddle at an early age.
As a musician Jon enjoys all settings where the music becomes a way to express, communicate and socialize - from the stage to the living-room.
He is highly regarded as a fiddler in the traditional music of Dalarna and is a sought-after teacher.
Sven Ahlbäck comes from northern Uppland in Sweden. He started playing the fiddle at a young age, learning from the legendary fiddler Anton Jernberg, who taught Sven a rich tradition of tunes from Gästrikland, which still is the core of Sven’s repertoire. It’s old-fashioned music, full of quarter tones and “shake strokes” – tunes as crooked as forest paths. He has been teaching with Ami Dregelid for twenty years, sharing with her a common fascination for the swinging qualities of the polska and the interaction between music and dance.
Sven is regarded as one of Sweden’s leading fiddlers and, on artistic merits, Sweden’s first folk music professor.
Ami Dregelid is known both as a dancer and a teacher and is an important role-model in today’s folk dance scene. She has more than 30 years experience in folk dance education and her dancing and teaching have been very influential in the folk dance community, besides making a practical contribution to the development of folk dance. For Ami, the interaction between the music and the dancers is central and she has over many years developed methods to communicate this when she teaches.
Andrew Parr trained as a dancer in Sweden and is also a talented musician.
His teaching is both thorough and inspiring and he is currently involved in running Swedish dance workshops all over England.

Most of our shows use ‘cabaret-style’ seating. This means that your seats will be unreserved, which allows you to decide where to sit when you arrive.
The stalls (downstairs) are set up informally, with chairs around small tables, for a sociable, relaxed atmosphere, and somewhere to put your drink. Cabaret seating also allows space for dancing, which is highly encouraged at Victoria Hall!
For those who prefer a more ‘traditional’ theatre experience, the balcony seats are laid out in rows and raked, ensuring all seats have an excellent view.
For parties of six or more, tables in the stalls can be reserved- contact us to reserve a table. If you have reserved a table, we ask that at least one of your party turn up at least 30 minutes before the performance start time, in order to secure your table.
We can always reserve seating or wheelchair spaces in the stalls for those unable to use the stairs- just let us know when you book your tickets.
Please note, online bookings are subject to a booking fee. Tickets can also be bought by phone on 01729 825718, or in person at our box office. Opening hours are 10am-2pm, Monday-Friday.
Show end times given are an estimate only. Doors open 45 minutes before show start times.
Settle Victoria Hall reserves the right to turn away any customers not adhering to social-distancing laws, government guidelines, and/ or venue safeguarding policies.
Tickets are non-refundable, except in the case that the event or date has been changed by Settle Victoria Hall.
